Sensuality, sharpness and speed - these are some of the key ingredients that shape Harry Ang’s bachata style.
The dance instructor, choreographer and DJ can be described as the driving force behind Malaysia’s bachata scene. As the pioneer of Kuala Lumpur’s first Bachata Sensual social night, Harry’s work is paramount in growing bachata’s popularity in Malaysia.
Known synonymously with the dance, Harry’s love for bachata dance sparked off by chance. He was invited to learn bachata after completing the Latin Ballroom circuit nearly 15 years ago. Through natural talent, dedication and hard work, Harry sprung to prominence when he was crowned Malaysia Bachata Champion in 2010 and Asia Bachata Champion in 2011.
Harry’s interpretation of bachata evolved and grew over the years, with the ability to adapt to the wide range in bachata music. When bachata sensual swept across the West, he found a strong calling, drawing inspiration from the community. Harry looks to several influences such as Korke and Judith for social styles as well as Alma Latina’s style for dynamic and passionate performances that emphasizes accents and sharpness.
Bachata sensual partnerwork requires good connection, preparation, and a safe experience for both dancers. He emphasizes mutual respect among dance partners, so leaders and followers feel comfortable with ample space for self-expression. That’s a key philosophy in Harry’s teaching style of the social aspect of bachata sensual which he hopes to share with the community.
Harry’s journey as a bachata instructor grew in depth when he delved into the disk jockey scene, driven by his first collaboration with DJ Gary. What initially began as ‘Bachata Hour’ in a salsa social night set up the scene for Harry to share passion for the dance. Harry’s selection of bachata music covers various styles, including Sensual, Moderna, Remix, Urbana and Tipica.
With rich musicality, his efforts pushed bachata into the spotlight when he began to host Sensual Wednesdays Social at Nicsmann 1940s by Lewre from 2018 to 2020. Social nights continued from 2022 till today at Z Botanica restaurant by Nicsmann - known as the only bachata sensual night in Malaysia.
Having taught for more than 10 years now, Harry continues to run weekly progressive classes in various studios and leads teams to perform on local and international stages. His experience at dance festivals and continued learning gives him the chance to enrich his teaching style, which he hopes to share with dancers in Malaysia. Harry’s advice to new dancers is to find inspiration from bachata - be it performance or role models - and continuously improve through consistent practice as bachata sensual requires knowledge and mastery of body movement.
Harry’s extensive and in-depth knowledge has earned him numerous invitations to global festivals and events. These include:
